Caring for your eyes

Look at all of us. Staring into our computers or mobile phones all day, posting and replying and Starring and re-posting on ADN.

Have you been caring for the main tool you use to access ADN (hint: not Netbot)? In other words, have you been taking care of your eyes?

Here's a quick test to see if you're destroying your eyes - keep your head still and move your eyes to the corners. Try to look towards the top right, top left, bottom right and left as far as you can see. Does it pain? If yes, you've been misusing your eyes. Why does it pain? Because you keep staring in one direction all the time - straight.

I gave you a quick test, so I'll also give you two quick cures -

  1. Keep your head still, like in the test, and move your eyes towards the edges of your sight, like in the test. Do this despite the pain. Your eyes will water. They will hurt. But soon the pain will go away, you'll be able to see farther at the edges of your eyes and when you finish this exercise, you'll feel a slight tingling in your eyes. That'll be your eyes thanking you for exercising them like you should every muscle in your body. Repeat this exercise as often as possible, or at least 3 times in your work day.

  2. When you've been working for about half an hour on your computer, stop and look outside the window for about 5 minutes. Don't look at the sky, look at the farthest object on the ground. I live and work near the Rockies, so I stare at the Rockies. The benefit of this exercise is that your eyes, which keep looking at near placed objects all day, prefer to look at farther placed objects (like Saber tooth tigers, Rhinos and Lions in the old days when we were all hunter-gatherers, jk). If you work in a server room all day and don't have a window, GET OUT! Go steal an empty office or meeting room and stare out the window like crazy. It'll save you from a lot of trouble with opticians and blindness later in life.

And while you're doing all this, keep reminding me to do so too. Keep #eyercising :)
